Hello! My name is Nancy Magana. I would like to begin my introduction by stating that as an immigrant it has been a long journey, but it was well worth the struggle. I was born in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico and brought to the United States when I was only three years old. I grew up in the beautiful city of Compton, California. I have one younger sister who loves to copy me in everything. I guess that is her way of saying she looks up to me, you know what they say, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." I lived a nice and carefree childhood. My dad was the primary financial provider for my family, which helped because that allowed my mom to stay home and take care of my sister and me. Since I was young my parents have emphasized the importance of education, which was one of their reasons for immigrating to the United States. All of my elementary and middle school years I excelled in school getting straight A's, but this changed when I entered high school. As a senior in high school I came across many limitations due to my immigration status. This discouraged me and I began to worry more on getting a job rather than pursuing my education. I began to work at a fast food restaurant and after a year I finally made the life changing decision of continuing my education. I enrolled into El Camino College, were I received my AA. Unfortunately, my immigration status, once, again became a burden to my dreams of becoming a teacher. Due to not being able to work I had to put my education on hold. It was until DACA became available that I continued my education. I enrolled to CSUDH in the Fall of 2015, and three semesters later I'm graduating. My dreams of pursuing a higher education were made possible, not only by my perseverance, but also by the unconditional support of my loving husband. My husband has been very supportive, both emotionally and financially and because of him I am now closer to accomplishing my dreams of becoming a teacher. Yes, it has been a long journey, but thanks to my persistence, my parents' and husband's encouragement, and DACA, I am now finishing my last semester at Cal State Dominguez Hills and pursuing a multiple subject teaching credential and a Master's in education.
